Q&A

I know it was on short notice, but thank you everyone who asked me questions!
I enjoyed reading them and I'll enjoy answering them even more so 💖
Here goes!

📚 If You Could Read One Book Genre Your Whole Life, What Would It Be? 📚

FANTASY.

Granted, I'll miss out on a lot of other fantastic books (gahh, so happy we don't actually have to choose!), but fantasy has always - and always will be - my genre. It's the genre I read most, the genre I love most, and the genre that is simply my genre.

So yeah... FANTASY all the way! (:

📕 If You Could Travel Anywhere in the World to Find a Place to Read,
 Where would it be?
📕

That's a good one.

There are so many places I want to write, but at the end of the day... it will always be Japan.

I could totally see myself sitting under the cherry blossom tree to read.

Or taking a stroll in wonderous places and finding the inspiration to write stories full of adventures.

Okay, those pictured are messing with my head so I'm going to stop now.

📙 What Book Would You Like to Live in? 📙

I thought about it, you know...

I think it's important to understand that you have to choose a world that fits you, a world where you can actually see yourself being in, rather than a world you want to be in just to meet your favorite characters.

I mean, of course I want to be in the world of TMI to meet Jace, Clary, SImon and the gang!

Of course I want to be in the world of Vampire Academy to meet Rose and Dimitri!

Of course I want to be in the world of Illuminae to meet Kady and Ezra!

But aside from that, I don't see myself actually living and surviving in those worlds.

So for me, it's going to be the Harry Potter books.
Since I love magic, and since I always wanted to be a wizard ;)

I may not love the Harry Potter books as much as I did when I was younger but there's no denying that world calls for me.

🕮 What's the Longest or Shortest Book You Ever Read? 🕮

Why not answer both?

Longest book I ever read: That would be Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which was 870 pages long.
Only two books ever came close to that, and those were: City of Heavenly Fire (725 pages long) and Winter (823 pages long. Real close!).

Shortest book I ever read: to the best of my knowledge, that would be Never Never 3, which was 92 pages long.
To be honest, though, I don't really like short books. It's only if I absolutely love the author, that I read their short stories. I mean... how can less than 200 pages ever be enough?
The two books that came closest to this were: The Demigod Files (151 pages long) and Never Never 2 (158 pages long)

📘 If You Could Have a Sidekick Who Would it Be (Fictional Character or Real)? 📘

First of: it's definitely going to be a fictional character.
Since no real life person can compare to fictional, sorry!
And anyways, if the choice is between fictional and reality, I will always choose fictional. Since reality will always be here when I come back.
Reality is tough that way.

Anyways!
Who will it be, who will it be?
A sidekick, huh?

Then it must be Kady from Illuminae.
This girl is hella cool, smart, funny, amazing, and kickass.
There could be no better person at my side than someone as real as Kady, to lift my spirits all the while thinking of a plan of attack.
I love this girl!

📗 If You Could Only Read the Works of One Author for the Rest of Your life, Who Would it Be? 📗

This is a cruel one.
But if I absolutely HAVE to choose (and I don't seem to have a choice in the matter), it would be Cassandra Clare.
Not only do I absolutely freaking love everything she writes, she also doesn't seem to want to stop writing EVER.
Which, honestly, could not make me happier.
And I don't care if a lot of people think she should stop or whatever because I don't want her to ever-ever-ever stop writing.
I'll never tire of it.
Because I always believed a book is determined by its characters and plot, and Cassandra's are simply divine.

🔖 Which Element Would You Like to Control (fire, water, earth, air) and Why? 🔖

Once upon a time I would have said fire.
But that had changed.
If I could ever have control of one element, I want it to be air.

So I could fly to far away places without a care in the world. So I could feel the air swirling around me.
And so, if I'm ever in trouble, I can create a hurricane and escape ;)

With fire, earth and even water, I would be grounded. But with air,  I would be free.
Which is why I'll choose air.

📖 What Are the Three Last Books You Finished & Choose a song that reminds you of them (3 books - 3 songs. A song per book) 📖

If you know me, you know I love music, and even more so to attach it to books.
Which is why this question is going to be very challenging and very fun!
Here goes.

So!
I had great fun answering all these questions - thank you, everyone!
I hope you enjoyed reading my answers (:
And now...
As a thank you for this wonderful year, I share here with you a part of a story I've been working on.
Hmm... I hope you'll like it '^^

Please note: English is not my native language. And while I rather speak and write in English than my native language, it still doesn't change the fact I didn't grow into it. So If there are any grammar issues, I apologize in advance.

Prologue

once upon a time, in a faraway land, there lived a princess. And the princess was very beautiful and pure of heart. One day, the princess went to this beautiful ball where she met her charming prince. He was handsome and brave and just. Naturally, the princess and the prince fell in love. The whole kingdom rejoiced at their union. And so, the prince and the princess married and lived happily ever af–

Wait, that's not right.

I put aside the silver book titled fairy tales, written in a golden wavy writing and pick up a dark-black book titled twisted fairy tales, written in silver writing.
Yes, that's the one.

Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, there lived a princess.

She had a father (the king), a mother (the queen) and a brother (the prince). She was much loved and very happy, respected by the people and kind to all. Every night before going to sleep, the princess wished upon the stars for the safety and prosperity of her kingdom.
What the princess didn't know was that wishes were only granted in fairy tales.
She used to believe her life was a fairy tale. In fairy tales, the princess is always rescued by the prince from terrible danger and whisked away into the sunset. The prince is everything she ever wanted; brave, handsome, good and just.
In fairy tales, you always know who the bad guy is. He's the one wearing the black cape and the evil smile.
But then you grow up and realize it's all just an illusion, a trick. A beautiful fantasy meant to lull you out of your naturally build guard to serve as an easy prey for the true evil that's lurking outside. Because evil, you see, is not wearing a black cape or an evil smile. No, evil is sophisticated, charming, perfect.
Fairy tales are not created by people, they're created by monsters. Fairy tales are a vessel to make you believe in something and not see the truth until it is already too late.
One day, the princess realized her life wasn't a fairytale. Not even close. It was a dark mess wrapped in a beautiful pink ribbon.
Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, there lived a princess. She was much loved and very happy. Until one day she came across a shining black box wrapped in a beautiful pink ribbon. She reached out her hand and the ribbon fell away. She opened the box and the darkness came pouring out. She screamed, desperately trying to seal the box shut. But the ribbon was gone and she knew… the princess knew it was too late.
The darkness was already out.
And it was never going inside the box ever again.

  Chapter 1

There will come a time when you believe everything is finished; that will be the beginning.
 – Louis L'amour.

I was standing under the cherry blossom tree, the cold searing into my bones, the black cape I stole from one of the fallen guards blowing in the freezing wind behind me.
I was supposed to run. Hide. Escape.

But I couldn't. It was of no use. I was no warrior, but I knew a doomed battle when I saw one. I had nowhere to run. I could hide but for how long?
It didn't matter that I was the princess and this was my castle. Not anymore.
The strangest thing about being in shock: you feel nothing. You process everything but you don't get the emotions accompanying what you see. Logically you know you should be grieving or terrified out of your mind, but all you feel is… numb.
I just watched my entire family slaughtered by a brother I no longer knew, the castle I grew up in overridden by enemy's knights and everyone and everything I ever knew killed or captured.
And me? I was standing under the cherry blossom tree in the searing cold, wearing nothing but a light dress and a black oversized cape. Waiting.
I didn't have to wait long. They arrived – as I knew they would. A party of six black knights.
In an old adventure book I once read, there was that saying: "when you have nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, choose a place and make your stand." I thought it was poetic, heroic. 'Making my stand' under the cherry blossom tree, I realized how tragic is actually was. Making your stand wasn't the action of a person fighting to win. It was the action of those who knew they were going to die and intended to go down fighting.
I didn't realize someone was talking to me until a deep, melodic voice jolted something inside of me. Something I couldn't reach. Something I couldn't feel. Not yet. Not quite yet.
I turned around. Slowly. "Hello, brother," I greeted the person standing in front of me. My voice was as calm and cold as the snow falling from the sky. For a moment, I was glad for my lack of feelings. I would never have been able to face my brother otherwise. I needed to make every last second I had with him count.
And so I forced myself to look him in the eyes.
He had the same dark-black eyes he always had. The same wavy black hair. The same face. The same build. He looked like my brother but he didn't feel like my brother. Not anymore.
Or perhaps it was me who did not know my brother at all.
"Emilia." He nodded, assessing me with his cool glare. He never ruled out anyone as a threat, my brother. "Never underestimate what people are capable of," he used to say.
But it was obvious he didn't see me as any kind of threat now by the way he nodded at the knight standing next to him, inclining his head in my direction.
The black knight marched forward and grabbed my arms. I stood in my place, not moving, my gaze fixed on my brother.
I couldn't even call him by his name. To me, it was always 'brother' or 'big brother'. I knew the minute I'll start calling him by his name is the minute he'll be lost on me forever. And despite everything he did… despite the fact that I wanted to claw his eyes out with my bare hands, I wasn't ready to let him go.
I lost everything and everyone, and even though he was the reason for it all, he was also the only connection to my life I had left. He already severed it, but if I severed it too, I would remain completely and utterly alone. A fallen princess.
"Why?" I asked him as the knight started dragging me away. It was just one small word, containing every single one of the frozen emotions inside of me.
I didn't care how or when or where. I didn't even care where he was taking me or if he was going to kill me too. I only cared for one thing: why.
If he told me that, if he gave me that one solace, I could go down knowing why it had to happen. But he didn't. Instead, he just looked at me with his cold glare, raising his sword, sheathing it slowly. My eyes followed his motion almost involuntarily, resting on his blood soaked blade.
Blood.
So much blood.
Mother screaming. Father with a sword through his heart.
Blood everywhere.
Someone is screaming.I'm screaming.
My breath was coming out in gasps as I stared at the drops of blood slowly sinking into the snow.
The ice wrapped around my feelings wasn't melting, it was shattering. And I was shattering along with it.
"You're a monster," I choked out, starting to struggle in the tight grip of the knight.
My brother's eyes met mine. If I could breathe fire, he would be shrouded in flames by now. Every single one of them.
He shook his head as if I was a child he was trying to explain something very complicated to. Was that a look of pain crossing his face? No, probably just wishful thinking on my part. "No, Emilia," he said. Not 'my sister' or 'little sister' or 'beloved sister'. Just… Emilia. "I'm simply the vessel. The real monster will be arriving soon." He nodded to the black knight who was still holding me way too tightly than was necessary. "Take her to the carriages." And with that, he turned on his heels and walked away, followed by a party of dark knights.
As I was dragged away by the lone knight, I willed my brother to look back. Just once. Just one last time.
He never did.

I'm looking forward to a second year on Magiverse, filled with a laughter and smiles :')

Q&A Announcement!

So I was thinking and thinking and thinking and thinking and then thinking some more about what on earth I was going to do for Magiverse's blogiversary (which is on March 8, two days from now!).

A giveaway?
That would be awesome to do for you guys! if only I had the money. Or books. To give away. Which, at this point in my life, I do not.

I could do a Guide For the Newbie blogger. Which honestly, I always wanted to do but thought it best to wait for when I was no longer a newbie myself. Which, at one year, I suppose I no longer am (?).
I still have a lot to learn, and I'm still pretty new at this, but this guide could be a fun way to share what I learned during this year of blogging.

And then I saw Lauren from Wonderless Reviews doing a Q&A for her own blogiversary (happy blogiversay, Lauren!) and I thought: huh, I always wanted to do that but I always felt self-conscious about it, and am I all that of an interesting person anyway? and... but wait. There is no greater gift I could give to my blog than overcoming my self-consciousness and fears.

And so... with that in mind, I decided to go ahead with it and announce a Q&A post!

I love you guys, and I wouldn't be here today without each and every one of your support. A blog is nothing without its followers and this past year I learned so much and was changed so much.

If you could do one more thing for me... ask me anything you want.
From 'what book you would bring with you to a deserted island' to 'what's your middle name' feel free to throw questions my way.

And thank you.
For everything up until now.
And for everything yet to come.

How to Fall in Love by Cecelia Ahren - (Quick) Book Review

How to Fall in Love by Cecelia Ahren
Publication date: October 23, 2013
My rating: 3.5 stars

There was absolutely nothing I did not like about this book.

It was such a thought-provoking, emotional, wonderful story of two people who meet in the most of unexpected ways and somehow... unintentionally, fall in love.

But this story is so much *more* than just falling in love. It deals with so many subjects and feelings and sadness and hope.
It's a wonderful story about what it means to be alive.
About how, even in our darkest of moments, even when we can't see it for ourselves, there is always hope.

It's about the power of asking for help when you need it.
It's about knowing that, despite everyone and everything in the world, there *is* someone out there who'll listen and help. No matter what.
It's about the strength to not give up.

This book heavily deals with suicide (both the act and thoughts), mental health and death. I'd recommend anyone who is uncomfortable with the subject to think about whether they feel they're able to read it or not.
Because this book is also about life, and love, and friendship, and laugh, and hope.
Life is all these things. It's never just this or that. It's a series of moments. Some of them sad, some of them happy. Each moment eventually passes, so when you're sad remember you'll be happy once more. And when you're happy know that you can get through the sad to be happy once more.

This is an adult contemporary story (I know, not my usual type of read) about a woman named Christine who, one night, finds herself talking a man off jumping from a bridge. She unintentionally finds herself promising him to show him the beauty of life. And so, with only 2 weeks until the final deadline, Christine must save this strange man's life. All the while falling in love.

As someone who once knew a person who committed suicide, I found this book very touching and important to read.

I swear, this book isn't all that short and yet I devoured it with hardly any breaks in between.
It was just that compelling to read.

Also, did I mention it takes place in Ireland (a place I have never been but am totally in love with)?

Thank you, Cecelia Ahern, for writing a story I did not want to put down.
For writing a story that made me feel light and hopeful inside.

Life is a series of moments and moments are always changing, just like thoughts, negative and positive. And though it may be human nature to dwell, like many natural things it's sensless, sensless to allow a single thought to inhabit a mind because thoughts are like guests or fairweather friends. As soon as they arrive, they can leave, and even the ones that take a long time to emerge fully can disappear in an instant. Moments are precious; sometimes they linger and other times they're fleeting, and yet so much could be done in them; you could change a mind, you could save a life and you could even fall in love.

Most Anticipated Books of March 2017

OMG, you guys! It's March!
You know what that means, right?
It means:

1) I'm turning 19! (on March 28). Which is even more horrifying than it sounds. Sorry, biology, but I still look and feel 16 so I have no idea how this is even possible.

2) It's not just my birthday, it's my blog's birthday too! Exactly 20 days before my 18th birthday, on March 8, 2016, was when I opened Magiverse. Good times, good times (:

So yeah... for me March isn't just about my most anticipated books. It's so much more.

But since it's still the very beginning of March, and since I have no idea what I'm going to do for my birthday and blogiversary (should have thought about that sooner), let's just focus on our most anticipate books of March, shall we? ;)

Garden of Thorns by Amber Mitchell
Publication date: March 6, 2017

I found out about this book by browsing through the YA books that are coming out this month on Goodreads.

I fell in love with this cover and immediately later with the synopsis. There aren't many reviews but most of them are very positive.

This is a YA fantasy that tells the story of 16-year-old Rose, a girl living in captivity in the garden.
One day, Rose finds a chance to escape. And so she does, taking with her a hostage. Only that hostage turns out to be not just a prince but also a traitor to the throne. Who now leads a rebellion against it.

In a twist of events, the tables are turned on Rose and now she's the prince's captive. And the prince thinks she was sent to sabotage his rebellion.
It's up to Rose to prove the prince all she really wants is for the other captives to be set free.

Sounds interesting, doesn't it?

Proof of Lies by Diana Rodriguez Wallach
Publication date: March 7, 2017

Another enchanting cover.
Another Interesting synopsis.

This is a YA mystery about a girl who sets out in search for her missing (presumed dead) sister. And who finds herself in the middle of a whole conspiracy.
At her aid is a black belt and a mysterious bad-boy with an accent (because who doesn't like those?) named Marcus.
Will Anastasia find her sister before it's too late?

I guess we shall see.

You're Welcome, Universe by Whitney Gardner
Publication date: March 7, 2017

Julia, a student at Kingston school for the deaf, was betrayed by her best friend and kicked out of school.
To make things worse, now she must navigate life at her new school as the only deaf student, all the while participating in a graffiti war against a mysterious person she does not know.

Reading the synopsis, this book really reminds me of a favorite TV show of mine Switched At Birth.
There aren't many books out there with deaf characters, and this girl sounds like a combination of Bay & Daphnee (the two main characters of Swithced at Birth).

Goodbye Days by Jeff Zentner
Publication date: March 7, 2017

I wasn't sure whether to include this book or not.
It has killer ratings (no pun intended), but I tend to avoid books that sound way too much for me to handle.
From the reviews, I can tell this brings out all the tragic feels.

As happy as books can make me, they can get me depressed too.
Which is why I need to be careful of these type of books.

But anyways... I can never quite resist a book once I'm interested in it.
So... here we are.

With one simple text message, Carver Briggs believes he's responsible for killing his 3 best friends.
How does a person go on from here?

Funny how people move through this world, leaving little pieces of their story with the people they meet, for them to carry. Makes you wonder what'd happen if all those people put their puzzle pieces together.

The End of Oz by Danielle Paige
Publication date: March 14, 2017

It's here!
It's FINALLY here!
*happy dance*
*tearing up in excitement*
Oh my god, it's here!

The fourth - and I don't know if it's the final - book in the Dorothy Must Die series!
It was only last year - at this exact same time - when I read and reviewed Yellow Brick War (Dorothy Must Die #3).

And now... here comes one of my most anticipated books of 2017!
I CAN'T WAIT.
What a morbid title, though. I really hope it's not the end of Oz.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the series, this is a twisted fairy tale retelling of The Wizard of Oz

It tells the story of Amy, a modern times Kansas girl who is swept away to Oz by a tornado.
There, she finds out the story of Dorothy actually happened.
But what most people don't know is that after Dorothy got home, she didn't stay there to live the rest of her days in peace. No, sweet Dorothy came back to Oz, turned evil, and sucked all the happiness from the place.
It's up to Amy to... well, kill Dorothy.

Highly recommended!
You may have heard not so great things about Danielle Page's other books (or this series), but I urge you to pick Dorothy Must Die up.
It's a really fun, quirky and twisted read.
You'll fly through it in no time.

The Metropolitans by Carol Goodman
Publication date: March 14, 2017

A Middle Grade / Historical Fiction / Fantasy story that takes place during WW2 (the day Japan bombed Pearl Harbor)
Someone said "YES!"?

4 teens.
Arthurian legend.
Magical powers.
Love, friendship, courage, and betrayal.
Will their fates be the same as those who came before them?

Now this sounds hella cool!
Give it to me please!

Hunted by Meagan Spooner
Publication date: March 14, 2017

A beauty & the beast retelling.
You know I'm all in for practically any retelling out there.

The reviews are super positive + Meagan Spooner is another collaborator of Amie Kaufman (who, along with the brilliant Jay Kristoff, wrote the fantastic Illuminae Files trilogy).

And that's all I really need to know, thank you very much.

She wept because she did not know what she wanted, and because she wanted everything.

Shadow Run by AdriAnne Strickland & Michael Miller
Publication date: March 21, 2017

This is a book I want to read because it sounds so cool and awesome.

It takes place on a spaceship, there is a prince in hiding, a girl named Qole who's the youngest person ever to command her own ship, and apparently some LGBTQ elements.

I say: I want to read this!

The Hidden Memory of Objects by Danielle Mages Amato
Publication date: March 21, 2017

This is a YA fantasy / Historical / mystery about a girl dealing with her brother's untimely death.

Megan doesn't believe her brother, Tyler, died the way everyone says he did.
Megan sets out to figure out what really happened when all of sudden she discovers a power she didn't know she had: the ability to see the memories attached to objects.
With that power, she doesn't just find out more about her brother... but so much more than that.

Nemesis by Brendan Reichs
Publication date: March 21, 2017

This one sounds like a really interesting YA thriller.
I'm honestly not sure what genre it is exactly because it sounds like all of them! YA, fantasy, sci-fi, thriller, mystery...

The story revolves around two teens; there is Min, a girl who - ever since her 8th birthday - was murdered in cold blood every two years. Only to wake up utterly and completely fine hours later, with no evidence whatsoever of the crime. And Noah, a boy plagued by nightmares of murder and death.
There is a conspiracy involving 64 sophomore students.
And then there's an asteroid threatening life on earth.

This sounds like a book of many elements.
If done right, it could be super interesting to read!

100 Hours by Rachel Vincent
Publication date: March 28, 2017

YA thriller mystery seems to be the theme of the month.
No complaints here, since they all sound really good.
Including this one.
Just read the synopsis, you'll want to read it.

Also, I heard some good things about Rachel Vincent's other books (:

The Gauntlet by Karuna Riazi
Publication date: March 28, 2017

A steampunk Jumanji with a middle eastern flare?
Say no more!
Have my birthday prayers miraculously come true?
This book even sounds like Jumanji - which is basically my favorite childhood movie ever - and it's coming out on my birthday!

*taking it all in for a minute*

Seriously, though. Jumanji was one of my most favorite movies EVER when I was a little girl.
Strange choice for favorite movie as a kid, I know, but I always had a love for fantasy and creepy stuff - even as a child ;)

I simply need to read this book!
Just a while ago I re-watched Jumanji for the first time in years + found out there was going to be a sequel coming out sometime this year.
And now this!
*squeals*

Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
Publication date: March 28, 2017

I'm pretty sure everyone wants to read this one.
Am I right?
Laini Taylor is a very loved and very talented author.
I know because I, as a matter of fact, read Daughter of Smoke & Bone way back in the day when it was translated into my native language.

Strange the Dreamer is her new YA sci-fi fantasy romance trilogy. Which sounds super intriguing and super unique.

And it's also coming out on my birthday so YAY more birthday presents!

Blood Rose Rebellion by Rosalyn Eves
Publication date: March 28, 2017

Blood Rose Rebellion is pitched as the first in a new YA trilogy for fans of Red Queen

As one of those who enjoyed the ride of Red Queen but didn't really love it enough to pick up the second book, I can say I'm unsure about Blood Rose Rebellion. Especially since it seems to be going along the lines of the type of books I don't tend to really love anymore.

Despite that, I always believed a great book is determined by its writing and characters. Which is why I'm always giving these type of books a chance.
One of them will be sure to stand out.

Radio Silence by Alice Oseman
Publication date: March 28, 2017

This is a book I want to read from hype alone.
Everyone on Goodreads is raving all about it and it honestly makes me want to rave about it too.
But first, I must read it.
I hope I can say: "It was amazing!" like everyone else.

This is an LGBT YA contemporary romance story.
I don't know much else about it other than how amazing everyone says it is! (:

He smiled and looked away. "Sometimes I think we're the same person... but we just got accidently split into two before we were born."

And this is it for my most anticipated books of March 2017!
What about you guys? Any books that could not come soon enough
for you this month?
Are you anticipating some of the books I am? Are there any I didn't mention
here?
Let me hear you rave all about them! (:
Also: have you any advice for what should I do on Magiverse for its blogiversary?
I'm clueless '^^
Until then...

"You're a storyteller. Dream up something wild and improbable," she pleaded. "Something beautiful and full of monsters."
"Beautiful and full of monsters?"
"All the best stories are."
